A California couple with five children, including a newborn, died weeks apart after contracting COVID-19, The Washington Post reported.

Davy and Daniel Macias of Yucaipa, Calif., and their four children were stricken with COVID in August, causing both  parents to be hospitalized as their condition worsened.

Davy’s sister-in-law, Terri Serey, told the Post that Davy Macias was intubated and dying from the virus when doctors helped her to give birth to her newborn daughter via Caesarean section.

Serey mentioned that Daniel Macias wanted to wait to name their child, since he believed he and his wife would recover from their infections.

Davy Macias, 37, died a week after giving birth. Daniel Macias, 39, died two weeks later from complications due to COVID, according to the Post.

Serey said that Daniel Macias had no idea that Davy Macias died even though they were a few rooms away from each other at the medical facility.

“[Daniel] was well enough to send me a picture of the baby,” Serey told the Post. “But that was the last text I received from him.”

The Maciases’ passing follows news of an unvaccinated Texas couple who died from virus complications weeks apart, leaving behind four children, the Post reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended in August that pregnant people should be vaccinated against the virus.

It is unclear whether Davy or Daniel Macias were vaccinated against the virus, the Post noted.
