Michigan averaged 257 new cases of coronavirus for each of the past four days, and the virus remains persistent in some parts of the state.

Four-day totals announced by the state health department Tuesday are 1,028 new confirmed cases and 14 deaths, all of which were found from a regular review of vital records.

As cases have generally declined, the state has scaled back daily reporting of new numbers to twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

In the meantime, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will be in Highland Park at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with Saturday Night Live star Tim Meadows to announce the second round winners of the MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes, which awards money in a random drawing to state residents who have been vaccinated against the virus.

Whitmer will announce two $50,000 drawing winners and one $1 million prize winner.

Before you get your hopes up, the $1 million winner will be on hand to answer questions following the new conference, indicating that he or she already knows of the winning drawing.

Even so, the public can watch the event via livestream at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/michiganhhs/.

Michigan, like a number of other states, has joined in offering cash prizes to boost vaccination rates.

But state statistics suggest the sweepstakes-style contest hasn’t moved the vaccination needle all that much.

Roughly 55% of state residents ages 12 and over have been completely vaccinated against the virus. The state goal has been to reach 70%.

Meanwhile, new cases of the virus persist.

The four-day totals announced Tuesday include 150 cases and two deaths in Wayne County, 146 cases and two deaths in Oakland County, 98 cases and two deaths in Macomb County, and 57 cases in Detroit.

In other areas of the state, there were 62 cases in Kent County, 23 cases in Kalamazoo County, 24 cases in Ottawa County, 33 cases and one death in Genesee County, 25 cases and one death in Saginaw County, and 38 cases and one death in Washtenaw County.

Over the four days, 19 of the state’s 83 counties reported no new cases or deaths.
