More than 6,900 fully vaccinated people in the Bay State tested positive for coronavirus last week, a daily average of about 988 people as breakthrough infections increase rapidly ahead of Thanksgiving.

The count of 6,917 breakthrough cases last week was up from the tally of 5,313 breakthrough infections in the prior week. The week before that was 4,608 cases, and the previous week was 3,192 cases.

Breakthrough cases in Massachusetts have been making up about 35% to 40% of the state’s overall cases in recent months amid the more highly contagious delta variant. People who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for infection and a severe case.

Case counts in the state have been spiking in the last couple of weeks, and breakthrough infections are following that trend before Thanksgiving.

A few factors contributing to the overall rise include: more than 2 million people in the state are still not fully vaxxed, the vaccine’s effectiveness starts to wane after six months, and more people are gathering indoors as the weather turns colder.

Overall, 71,037 fully vaxxed people have tested positive for the virus, according to new data from the state Department of Public Health on Tuesday. That’s 1.5% of the more than 4.8 million fully vaxxed people in Massachusetts.

The 71,037 overall cases is a jump of 6,917 breakthrough infections from last week — or a daily average of 988 fully vaccinated people testing positive.

Last Tuesday’s report had showed an increase of 5,313 breakthrough cases, a daily rate of 759 fully vaxxed people testing positive.

The week before that was a rise of 4,608 infections — a daily average of 658.

The previous week’s count was 3,192 cases, a daily rate of 456.

Breakthrough hospitalizations have been accounting for 30% to 35% of current COVID-19 hospitalizations. Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for a severe case and hospitalization.

There have been 2,285 hospitalizations among fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts, which represents 0.05% of those who are fully vaxxed.

The 2,285 total patients is a one-week increase of 205 fully vaxxed patients. That’s up from the previous weekly increase of 140 fully vaxxed patients. The week before that was 147 fully vaxxed patients.

The state has reported 552 breakthrough deaths, or 0.01% of those who are fully vaxxed. That’s a one-week increase of 43 deaths. That’s a bit higher than the previous weekly increase of 41 deaths. The week before that was 30 deaths.
