Cases of the new potentially more contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus has sparked concerns across the world, just days after being identified in South Africa. Governments around the world are scrambling to stop the spread of Omicron, returning to stricter Covid guidelines and imposing travel restrictions on at-risk nations.Despite the banning of flights, there are mounting concerns that the variant has already been widely seeded around the world. On Monday, Canada reported its first cases of the Omicron infection with two patients, while 8 possible cases were detected in France on Sunday. Earlier, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong had also reported that the variant has been found in travellers. Top infectious diseases expert Dr Anthony Fauci said he would not be surprised if the Omicron variant was already in the United States, too.India, too, has started tightening its travel rules to prevent the transmission of the new variant. The Centre on Sunday said on Sunday said it would review the resumption of scheduled international commercial flights.
