The OC Health Care Agency reported 6,428 new cases of the coronavirus on Friday, Jan. 7, increasing the cumulative total since tracking began in the county to 374,860.

The county has reported at least 5,000 or more cases per day in the last five days.

The county dashboard’s variant tracking shows that the omicron variant is the majority of cases that have been sequenced. The most recent update is as of Jan. 2. The chart below shows the variants by disease week.

Another 55 people with confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in Orange County hospitals on Friday, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to 779, with 122 patients in intensive care units. A year ago on Jan. 6, Orange County had 2,251 patients hospitalized with the coronavirus.

The county reported three more deaths as of Friday, increasing the count of those who have died from the virus in Orange County to 5,906. Orange County officials confirmed Thursday night that a child under the age of 5 died in December of complications from COVID-19. There are a total of three deaths in the age group of 0-17 since the pandemic began.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 28.

Of the 5,906 deaths reported from the virus, 1,220 were skilled nursing facility residents, 647 were in assisted living facilities, two were O.C. jail inmates and 19 were listed as homeless.

It is estimated 311,734 people have recovered from the virus. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
