87 Coronavirus Deaths, More Than 10000 Cases Reported Over Weekend In Illinois

CHICAGO — Eighty-seven people were reported to have died from coronavirus this weekend in Illinois.

Reports of new cases and deaths often lag during the weekends, but the state still reported 63 deaths Saturday and 24 more Sunday. At least 9,505 Illinoisans have died from COVID-19.

Of the most recent victims, 29 were in Cook County, including a man in his 20s.

The weekend also saw 10,223 confirmed cases — 4,062 Sunday and 6,161 Saturday — to bring Illinois’ total number of confirmed cases up to 374,256.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate rose to 6.1 percent Sunday. The state reported 72,097 tests Sunday and 83,517 tests Saturday.

As of Saturday night, 2,605 people were hospitalized with coronavirus in Illinois, including 565 people in the ICU and 214 people using ventilators.

In Chicago, an average of 703 new cases are being reported and two people are dying per week. The city’s positivity rate rose to 7.1 percent.

At least 3,030 Chicagoans have died from coronavirus and there have been 93,585 confirmed cases.

Officials warned all of last week Chicago and the rest of Illinois are in the midst of a second surge of COVID-19. Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot have urged Chicagoans to wear masks, stay 6 feet apart and stop gathering to slow the virus’s spread and prevent more cases and deaths.
